3SquaresVT (formerly Food Stamps)

3SquaresVT is one of the most reliable, consistent, and dignified means to prevent hunger and is our country’s largest nutrition program. The Campaign began its 3SquaresVT outreach efforts in 2000 in response to low participation by eligible Vermonters. In 2001, there were only 38,558 participants. Today, there are over 85,000.

3SquaresVT is a federally funded program designed to alleviate hunger and malnutrition:

  • Formerly known as Food Stamps, The federal government has renamed the program the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). In Vermont, it's now known as 3SquaresVT. For a current view of the federal program and participation data by state and county, see the November 29, 2009 New York Times article: The Safety Net: Across U.S., Food Stamp Use Soars and Stigma Fades

  • In January, 2009 income limits increased; more Vermonters became eligible. Retirement accounts no longer count as resources.

  • An example of an eligible household – family of 4 making $39,220 per year

  • Over 85,000 Vermonters (1 in 8) receive 3SquaresVT benefits - 40% are children

  • The average monthly benefit for a household is about $240.

  • Approximately 68% of those eligible participate; only 34% of eligible seniors participate

  • USDA has found that every $1 of 3SquaresVT benefits spent generates $1.84 in total economic activity. In 2009, the program will bring approximately $108 million into the state, generating $200 million in economic activity.

  • 4,706 Vermonters, 1 in 16 getting 3SquaresVT, have no other source of income, according to a recent New York Times article, “Living on Food Stamps and Nothing Else.” That’s a 66% increase in two years (June 2007 to June 2009).

  • The new phone number to call for benefits is 1-800-479-6151. If a caller is unable to navigate the prompts, they can just stay on the line and someone will answer.
