Special Events

In addition to our annual Hike for Hunger, the Vermont Campaign to End Childhood Hunger holds many other events across the state each year. Upcoming events for 2010 include:

Hunger Awareness Day -- February 11, 2010

Taking place each year at the State House on the second Tuesday of February, Hunger Awareness Day is the Campaign’s call to Vermont’s legislators to support the important policies and nutrition programs that feed our hungry children. From 7-11AM, our staff, in partnership with the Vermont Foodbank, the School Nutrition Association, and Vermont FEED,will provide hunger data and information to state senators, representatives, and the general public.

President Obama has made addressing hunger a national priority by committing to end childhood hunger by 2015. Vermont can do its part by supporting and strengthening the child nutrition programs and food safety net.

Hunger Awareness Day

Legislators can help hungry Vermonters and bring federal funds into the state by supporting the Child Nutrition Omnibus Bill. The Child Nutrition Omnibus Bill will:

  • Improve program access and leverage more federal funds by taking advantage of all 3SquaresVT (formerly Food Stamps) options.

  • Serve thousands of children at high risk for hunger by requiring 21st Century Community Learning Centers to use a federal nutrition program, providing afterschool snack to their 12,000+ participants.

  • Ensure summertime nutrition to children participating in school-sponsored summer programs in low-income districts.

  • Directly certify children for enrollment in free school meals monthly. By directly certifying students more often through 3SquaresVT, more low-income students receive school meals and more federal funds are brought into our struggling school meal programs.

The Cows Come Home to Burlington The Cows Come Home to Burlington

The Cows Come Home to Burlington is a community art project being exhibited in downtown Burlington. It’s a 24/7, all-weather exhibit which will be the highlight of the summer season! Local artists will be painting 35 life-like fiberglass cows to be put on display May through October 2010.

A portion of the proceeds from this fun event will benefit the Vermont Campaign to End Childhood Hunger. For more information visit the Lake Champlain Regional Chamber of Commerce website or contact Matt McMahon at Matt@vermont.org.
