3SquaresVT (formerly Food Stamps)
3SquaresVT is one of the most reliable, consistent, and dignified means to prevent hunger and is our country’s largest nutrition program. The Campaign began its 3SquaresVT outreach efforts in 2000 in response to low participation by eligible Vermonters. In 2001, there were only 38,558 participants. Today, there are over 76,000.
The Campaign's Outreach Program:
- Conducts training sessions for advocates and service providers (.pdf)
- Facilitates statewide work group of state administrators and community partners
- Creates outreach and educational materials to increase participation
- Manages www.vermontfoodhelp.com, a resource for 3SquaresVT applicants and advocates that includes an eligibility calculator
- Works with Department for Children and Families to improve access
- Advocates for policies at the state and national level that improve access
- Spreads the word via the media about 3SquaresVT
3SquaresVT is a federally funded program designed to alleviate hunger and malnutrition:
- In January, 2009 income limits increased; more Vermonters became eligible. Retirement accounts no longer count as resources.
- An example of an eligible household – family of 4 making $39,220 per year
- Approximately 76,000 Vermonters (1 in 9) receive 3SquaresVT benefits - 40% are children.
- Approximately 68% of those eligible participate; only 38% of eligible seniors participate.
- USDA has found that every $1 of 3SquaresVT benefits spent generates $1.84 in total economic activity. In 2009, the program will bring approximately $84 million into the state, generating $155 million in economic activity.
