Join the 13th Annual Hike for Hunger This Fall

Dozens of schools across Vermont are signing up to join the Vermont Campaign to End Childhood Hunger’s 13th annual Hike for Hunger, which will take place during the month of October 2009. This school-based special event inspires students to walk, climb, and hike across the state to raise money and awareness for hunger and nutrition issues facing Vermont’s children.
The Feeding Minds school curriculum for elementary teachers can be used in conjunction with the Hike. The curriculum uses facts, statistics, and interactive classroom activities to stress the importance of regular and healthy meals while also educating kids about the issue of hunger in our state.
High School, University and Corporate Hike participants can learn about hunger in Vermont by viewing our 14-minute documentary, Every Child, Every Day. Hikers can also participate in our Nutrition Safety Net Game which is an interactive activity that helps participants gain a deeper understanding of challenges and solutions for food insecure families.
Each year, over $20,000 is raised by hundreds of students across the state. Thanks to these Vermonters, the Hike for Hunger sends a strong and clear message to Montpelier that support for 3SquaresVT (formerly called food stamps), summer food sites, and free and reduced breakfast and lunch programs are integral for the health of families on a tight budget. This year, the money raised through the Hike will directly fund the grocery costs of the Campaign’s Cooking for Life nutrition education series in 2010.
