As 3SquaresVT Senior Nutrition Program & Policy Specialist at the Vermont Campaign to End Childhood Hunger, Angela Smith-Dieng works extensively with Vermont’s Department for Children and Families, local advocates, and community groups across Vermont to improve access to and participation in 3SquaresVT, formerly the Food Stamp Program.
Angela is an expert on the complexities of this federally funded nutrition program and its implementation in the State of Vermont. She is able to answer in-depth questions from journalists, advocates, and community groups concerning eligibility requirements, benefits, barriers to access, and policy initiatives.
Before joining the Campaign, Angela worked at the local, national, and international levels on behalf of vulnerable populations. She began her career as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Mauritania, West Africa, focusing on education and community development; in Elizabeth, NJ she managed an emergency social service center that provided food, shelter, and basic needs to low-income residents; and in Washington, DC she helped grow a national coalition of organizations advocating for the rights of immigrants detained throughout the U.S. with Detention Watch Network.
Angela received her Bachelor of Arts in English from Middlebury College and her Master of Arts in Sustainable Development from the SIT Graduate Institute in Brattleboro, where her research focused on the food pantry phenomenon and developmental empowerment.
